Fire tore through a house in Leatherhead last night, causing extensive damage.

A Leatherhead fire officer said they were called to the blaze at 10.50pm at a large, two-storey, detached family home in Oxshott Road.

He said firefighters found “the whole roof alight” when they arrived and that the fire “rapidly spread” to the first and ground floors.

The firefighter added: “The fire had broken through the roof and spread to the first floor.  The roof then came down into the ground.

“It spread to the whole house.  It was heavily damaged, but we tried to save as much as we could.

“The occupants were already out in the driveway when we got there so no one was injured.”

He said the fire service did not know the cause of the incident but believes “there will be an investigation into the fire”.

Firemen were still at the scene damping down the damaged building this morning.
