A Western take on the Hindu festival Holi is coming to South London.

The Holi Festival of Colours will see Battersea Power Station filled with a spectacle of bright colours.

Holi takes place on the full moon of the Phaluga month and is one of the most famous celebrations in northern India.

During the festival people celebrate the victory of good over bad and the beginning of spring.

Revellers paint themselves with different colours and throw colourful powder into the air to express freedom, while the Indian caste-system is nullified.

Three Berliners Jasper Hellmann, Max Riedel and Maxim Derenko were inspired to set up their own version of the festival in Germany.

The first event kicked-off in Berlin on May 11 last year, with the sky above the Olympic Park filled with bright coloured powder.

Events in Stuttgart and Munich sold out within minutes and the founders are now taking the event on a European tour.

Your Local Guardian:

Alongside the powder throwing musicians, DJs and artists perform during the event.

Kele Okereke, singer in band Bloc Party, will be performing a DJ set with more acts set to be announced in the next few weeks.

Maxim said: "In Stuttgart it took less than two hours for all 15,000 tickets for the Holi Festival of Colours to be sold out.

Your Local Guardian:

"In Munich it was a mere 30 minutes before all tickets were gone.
"Apart from London, many other metropolises, such as Berlin, Amsterdam,

Vienna and Barcelona are part of our European tour."
