A motorcyclist killed in a hit-and-run crash in a residential street on Sunday was a father-of-two from Selsdon.

Kevin Jenkins, 55, of Sylvan Close, died of multiple injuries when his bike collided with a 4x4 in South Croydon on Sunday.

Two men fled on foot from the Volkswagon Toureg 4x4 after the crash, which left the bike's mangled remains strewn across the road.

Witnesses described a scene of carnage following the collision in St Peter's Road, at the junction with Dean Road, at about 1.45pm.

Residents rushed out of nearby houses and are thought to have tried to help Mr Jenkins, who ran a scanning company, but he was pronounced dead at the scene after the arrival of paramedics and an air ambulance.

A 47-year-old men man was arrested at a nearby address later on Sunday on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at an accident.

He was bailed on Tuesday until July 22. The second man seen running from the crash has yet to be traced.

Residents in St Peter's Road, which was closed for eight hours following the crash, spoke of their shock.

Robert Streeter, 52, who lives metres away from the crash scene, said: "It was a horrible mess.

"There were pieces of the bike everywhere. It was an absolute wreck - totally scrambled. I have never seen anything like it.

"The traffic comes up here really fast because it is a long, straight road. There's been bad crashes before."

Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: "We heard a loud bang. A lot of people came out their houses but obviously there was nothing they could do.

"It is a horrible thing to have happened. People were really distressed."

David Pollen, a decorator working nearby, said: "I heard a loud bang and looked out. I saw the driver come out the door.

"He went over and looked at the guy who had been on the motorbike.

"I found out later the driver had done a runner with his jumper over his head."

He added: "The car was an absolute mess."

Detective Sergeant Clay O'Neil, from the Metropolitan Police Road Death Investigation Unit, appealed for witnesses.

He said: "Initial witness statements have helped piece together the events immediately after the collision. We know two men were seen running away from the VW Toureg - if you saw them flee then please call."

Witnesses can call the Met Police on 020 8285 1574 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
