Firefighters, Chinese dancers, and a collection of reptiles joined residents at yesterday’s Celebrating Chessington fair.

Residents braved leaden skies and piled in to the St Mary’s Centre and church fields to enjoy a funfair, barbecue and activities such as Zumba and football.

Organiser Nathasha Earney said: “In theory in our third year we know what we are doing.

“We have recruited more members of the church to help this year. We are very pleased with it. We get a lot of residents coming back which is the main thing.

“Everyone knows about it so we try and make sure there are lots of fun things to do but that there are lots of useful agencies who can provide information.”

Chessington Councillor Rachel Reid said: “The idea really is to promote resident participation in Chessington South.

“We want to get as many people involved in learning about what is available to them in their neighbourhood.

“Full credit to Saint Mary’s Church in terms of on-the-day organisation.”

Deputy mayor Alan Dean was also in attendance.

“We are proud to be part of it. Next year it is going to be a heat wave.”

Nine-year-old Shannon Sanders was visiting family in Chessington when she popped along for the day and came face to face with an owl.

She said: “It was a bit scary because he kept staring at me, but it was good because he was really soft.”
