A police officer trying to get a nightclub closed down once asked the venue how to get his daughter on the guest list for a sold out event, it has emerged.

At the second day of a licensing sub-committee hearing, which could see Wonderland on Cheam Road shut down, Sutton councillors heard the venue claim that police allegations into irresponsible management were "not well founded".

Barrister for Wonderland, Sarah Clover, questioned licensing officer Sergeant Withersby about an incident last year when he asked the then manager of the venue Jay Davison how to go about getting his daughter onto the guest list for an event with stars from The Only Way Is Essex.

Sgt Withersby told councillors he did not ask the club for any preferential treatment for his daughter, to which Mrs Clover replied, "because that would be wrong wouldn't it? But she did not pay to get in did she? Despite it being sold out."

The venue claim licensing officers had not make it clear to them that they were unhappy with the way the club was being run throughout last year, and it was them who asked for meetings with the police to discuss how to resolve any issues, but police failed to respond on several occasions.

In one incident, the hearing was told about a girl who police claimed had been left "abandoned to fate" by door staff outside the club - something which police claim happened to vulnerable girls on a regular basis - walked away from the club before throwing herself off a car park roof, miraculously surviving.

Wonderland quizzed police about why CCTV evidence used at the hearing had been edited to benefit their case.

Mrs Clover asked why a clip, which showed a reveller outside the club slumped against railings, had been edited so it did not show a bouncer walking over to them and giving them a bottle of water.

Police admitted the CCTV within the club was the best system they had ever seen.

Terry Davies, a former police officer who produced a report into his findings at the club after visiting five times last year, said he found staff professional and friendly and that police had not produced statistics to back up their claims.

The evidence will be summed up on Tuesday (June 4) before councillors make a decision the following week.
