Police are advising drivers to avoid Epsom town centre tomorrow and Saturday when up to 150,000 people descend on Epsom for the Derby.

There will be temporary alterations to many roads around the Downs while Waterloo Road will be closed around Epsom station.

As the eyes of the country fall on Epsom, police will support Epsom Downs Racecourse in making sure people stay safe on Ladies’ Day and Derby Day.

Superintendent Sharon Bush, from Surrey Police, asked people to plan their journeys carefully and use public transport if possible.

She said: "Those who must drive should exercise patience, allow plenty of time and park only in the clearly marked areas.

"Epsom town centre should also be avoided if you're driving.

"I would like to reassure members of the public that Surrey Police has experience of dealing with major events and has well-rehearsed plans in place to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time."

She added that the police will not tolerate antisocial behaviour or public disorder, adding: "Anyone found to be committing offences will be dealt with robustly."

Epsom and Ewell Neighbourhood Inspector Craig Knight warned of congestion and said his team will be out and about in the town centre.

Insp Knight said: "I would encourage people to enjoy the day. It’s a great day out and has to be one of the proudest days in Epsom.

"I’m really looking forward to policing it but want everybody to stay safe."
