Creative youths are being sought for a new internet radio station launching in Croydon.

Edutainment Radio is a station that will be run for young people by young people and hits the airwaves on May 29.

Nearly 40 young people have already signed up to be part of the project and listeners will be able to enjoy a variety of shows including talk, culture and news live from the studio in Praise House in London Road.

The project is overseen by Edutainment Organisation, which aims to promote young people's intellect and creativity through access to the media.

Everol Sampson, managing director of Edutainment, said his work with young people and in community development, inspired him to kick-start the project which he is funding himself pending National Lottery funding.

He said: "I wanted to create something specifically for young people, to empower them to make change and to enable them to have a voice in the community."

The team are now looking for more people to sign up as DJ's and presenters, as well as local bands and musicians who want to promote their music.

Participants will gain a qualification in radio automation software, as well as building experience in radio production.

Mr Sampson, who is funding the project, said: "We want Edutainment radio to represent the diversity in Croydon. There are over 100 different languages in the borough and we plan to have some shows broadcast and presented in different languages.

"It will be an opportunity to make great friends, but will also break down barriers between cultures. My message to young people in the borough would be to come along and give it a try.

"This is organic and will grow as the young people want it to grow, they will shape it."
