The plans for Stompond Lane sports ground have been officially unveiled to the public, including a housing complex, residential home and office.

Elmbridge Council plans to rip down the existing clubhouses at the ground, home to Walton and Hersham FC and Walton Athletics Club, and relocate to a £6m sports hub at Waterside Drive, home to Walton Casuals FC.

Outline plans, on show at a number of exhibitions in the next few weeks, have been revealed to the public, who are asked to give their feedback before the council submits its planning application.

Under the plans, a new health facility will be opened, 30 houses built – some affordable – and a care home and children’s nursery built.

Walton Tennis Club will remain on site with small changes to their current layout, which tennis players feared could exacerbate parking problems.

Jane English, 59, a member of the tennis club, said she feared the council may develop the tennis club area into houses when the club’s lease runs out in 2028.

The Walton resident said: “I would hate to see the tennis club go and you would hate to think that is under threat in the long term.

“Our problem is parking, at the moment people can come and go as they please.”

Independent transport consultant Steve Giles said: “People want to know that we are not going to cause traffic congestion and there are not going to be issues with parking.

“The main change for the tennis club is that currently they share a car park, but they will get their own parking which is closer to the courts.”

Andrew Reid of the Walton Society said the proposed health centre was in the wrong place.

He said: “There is also not enough green space. They are trying to put too much into one place.”

The outline plans will also be on show at unmanned stands in the civic centre in Esher and at Walton library, where people can offer their feedback.”
