Spencer Lacrosse Club fell at the final hurdle in their quest to become the best men’s team in the country last week.
Spencer, crowned Southern Premier Division champions in March, lost out in the national final 11-3 to Northern Premier champions Stockport – the most decorated club in English lacrosse having gone four season undefeated in the league.
Despite the loss, Spencer enjoyed a good season, losing just once in the league and retaining their flag for a league and cup double.
Their team for the final included three 17-year-olds who have come through the Spencer juniors programme.
Brothers Gabe and Will Barrie, and Cameron Leslie are also in the England development programme and are on course to one day gain full international caps.
They could not affect the result though in a game the two teams went into having scored a combined 521 goals this season.
Stockport surged into a four-goal lead and although Rob Holmes scored twice and Sam Dunwoodie once for Spencer, they could not get within three scores of their opponents.
