Businesses based in the Alders department store building say they have risen from the ashes after the flagship store's closure.

The arcade of eight stores, situated next to the former Allders department store, which closed last year has branded itself as North End Mall.

Their aim is to win back old customers as well as attracting new ones.

Neelofar Khan, of Chilli Chutney and Chai Corner situated in North End Mall, admitted business was severely affected when Allders first closed.

But she added the formation of a business association and the backing of Croydon Council has helped the affected companies to regain some of their lost custom.

Landlords, De’lancey Minerva have taken on responsibility for cleaning and lighting the shopping area walkway between George Street tram stop and North End and are working with the association to make improvements to the overall appearance of the space as part of the launch of the new brand.

The businesses, many of which have been operating in Croydon for the past 25 years, are also working to secure their long-term futures in the town after meeting with Westfield, who are teaming up with Hammerson to regenerate the town centre.

Ms Khan said: "We had to cut ties with the past and the rebrand is a way of looking to future, giving new energy and life to the Mall."
