Nearly a dozen uninsured vehicles were seized during a police operation last week.

Officers in Sutton took part in a London-wide crackdown on uninsured drivers and seized 11 cars which either were not insured or were being driven without a licence on Thursday, May 9.

Officers also handed out fines and penalties too drivers caught not wearing seatbelt, using mobile phones and other driving offences.

Four drivers were caught with cannabis in their cars and given warnings.

During the operation, which ended with more than 600 cars being seized across the capital, Sutton officers were also joined by bailiffs who chased up unpaid fines of between £500 and £1,400.

Roadside checkpoints manned by officers with automatic number plate recognition cameras were set up at various locations around the borough including Stafford Road in Wallington.

More than 450 vehicles were stopped in Sutton over the course of the operation.

Inspector Ceri Rowe said: "These operations will be continuing and you will be caught if you drive without insurance."

Police say research shows many uninsured drivers have a criminal record and actively use their vehicles to facilitate their offending.

Uninsured drivers are also five times more likely to be involved in collisions and less likely to have vehicles in a roadworthy condition.
