Police are carrying out door-to-door inquiries after a schoolgirl reported being followed by a white van as she was cycling home.

The incident happened at 3.15pm on Friday, May 10, when the teenager was cycling along Craddocks Avenue, in Ashtead, with a friend.

The girl noticed the man driving, what is believed to be, a Ford Transit van on several occasions.  He left the van at one point, but did not make physical contact with the girl or attempt to talk to her.

The man was in his 40s, with dark hair and a dark complexion, of medium-to-large build.  He was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.

PC Oliver Thomas said: "This incident was obviously very concerning for the girl and her family and I would appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area around the time it took place to contact officers with information.

"We are still in the early stages of the investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident and are carrying out a number of enquiries in the local area.

"I would appeal to the driver of the van to contact officers to ascertain the reason behind his movements and to establish if any offence has taken place."

Anyone with information should call the police on 101 quoting reference MV/13/1728.
