A research company has developed a method to detect horse meat in food.
Leatherhead Food Research, based in Randalls Way, Leatherhead, has been advising food companies since the start of the scandal.
A team of scientists have developed a new test which detects the presence of horse DNA as an adulterant of fresh meat or uncooked produce.
Professor Paul Berryman, chief executive officer, said: "Our scientists have been advising food companies on horse meat contamination since the start of the scandal.
"We have been particularly careful to check that the test is reliable and sensitive enough to give accurate and meaningful results.
"We are confident that our testing regimes are absolutely robust and they are ideal for on-going surveillance programmes."
