Last week’s long overdue sunny spell was greeted with extra enthusiasm by Wimbledon Chase Primary School, as its impressive gardening force could finally celebrate reaping the rewards of the bulbs for London initiative.
The scheme was launched at the end of last year by the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association which, in collaboration with Taylors Bulbs, aims to provide free bulbs to help schools and hospices cultivate new plant life.
Wimbledon Chase, boasting a team comprising children, parents and expert volunteer Tony Cullen, planted their initial allocation of more than 1,000 tete-a-tete narcissi during the bitterly cold winter and, following a difficult spring, the flowers have at last burst into bloom, much to the delight of Mr Cullen and his young helpers.
