A fire which destroyed a garage and damaged two maisonettes in Gladstone Road, Kingston, yesterday was caused by a discarded cigarette, London Fire Brigade has said.
Six fire engines and 35 firefighters fought the flames for two-and-a-half hours from 5.09pm.
The blaze started when a discarded cigarette set light to dry leaves, and spread to the garage, a fire brigade spokeswoman said.
Residents had reported hearing explosions before seeing the fire.
