Two pensioners died in a flat fire in Tooting last night, the London Ambulance Service have confirmed.

The fire broke out just after 9pm in Coverton Road, which lies between St George's Hospital and Tooting Broadway tube station.

The affected property was a first floor flat.

Two fire engines from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) , from Wimbledon and Mitcham, battled the blaze for almost an hour.

The LFB, who said they were working with police to establish the cause of the fire, confirmed two bodies were found in the property.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 9.30pm to Coverton Road to reports of a fire.

"We sent our hazardous area response team which deals with fires.

"We also sent an ambulance crew and a single responder in a car and a duty officer.

"Sadly two people were found dead at the scene."
