Two blood donors, who together saved the lives of 450 people, have been honoured for their dedication.

Bernard Simmons, from Croydon, and Sue Wilton, from Streatham, have both given blood 75 times - enough to prolong the lives of 225 patients.

They were recognised along with 70 other donors by NHS Blood and Transplant at an awards ceremony at Croydon Park Hotel in Altyre Road last month.

Mrs Wilton said: "For me, donating blood has become part of my life and I try to encourage people to donate blood all the time."

Each blood donation can potentially save three lives, but only four per cent of the eligible population give blood.

Only three per cent of those who do reach 75 donations and just one per cent reach 100.

John Canning, lead donor relations manager for Croydon at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "For these donors to get to either one of these milestones is amazing.

"This takes immense loyalty and compassion over a large period of time.

"While the blood donation process will have changed significantly since these people started donating, the need for blood is constant.

"I would like to congratulate all of these donors for their achievement and hope that they continue to give blood and inspire others to donate."

Anyone aged between 17 and 65, weighing at least 50 kg and in general good health, can start giving blood.
