It will be a case of ready, steady, bake in Croydon’s Old Town this month as a culinary competition returns for a second time.

The Great Croydon Bake Off returns to Exchange Square, Surrey Street for its spring competition next weekend.

The event, organised by Christo Matthews, is expected to attract hundreds of cake and baking enthusiasts to watch four people battle it out for a place in the grand final.

Croydon’s shoppers are invited to take a break from the High Street and sample the cakes on offer.

There will also be free masterclasses on the day for those interested in baking.

The event is inspired by hit BBC series, the Great British Bake Off, and is the first event of its kind to be held in Croydon.

It is split into four parts throughout 2013.

Each event will have a seasonal theme, which started with the winter bake off on February 16.

The next bake off is on July 13 with the grand final taking place on October 19.

Four different bakers will take part in each event and will be judged by professional bakers and culinary experts.

Judge, Sean Coughlan, a Croydon baker says: "The first Croydon Bake Off in February was brilliant.

"People were asking the bakers for tips and helping each other decorate cupcakes in the masterclass.

"People in Croydon clearly want to get involved in baking. The Croydon Bake Off gives them that chance."

Christo Matthews adds: "I cannot wait for the next round. For one, it will be warmer.

"The bakers coming through are all from very different backgrounds and are looking to bring an incredible mix of bakes to the day.

"We have thrown a lot into this event and Croydoners should expect a bigger, better and bolder Bake Off this time round."
