A trombone playing schoolboy has won a major jazz trombone competition.

Jasper Rose will embark on a week-long, all expenses paid jazz course near Seattle featuring world-famous jazz trombonists.

The 15-year-old, who has more than 1m hits on YouTube videos of him playing his trombone, outplated other musicians at the Carol Jarvis jazz trombone competition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester on Sunday, April 28.

Jasper, who in his final year at Christ’s School and studies at the Royal College of Music on Saturdays, said he was excited about the trip.

He said: “At the competition we had to play two pieces in front of a panel of judges. They said good things about all of us.

“It was a massive surprise when I won because I was really nervous so I wasn’t paying attention to how well I was playing.”

Jasper, who lives in East Sheen, started playing the trombone when he was eight after seeing a Glen Miller band with his grandparents and said he wanted to pursue music as a career.

He said: “It definitely is something I want to do further and I think this might have been the trigger.

“Hopefully I will go to music college and then become a freelance jazz trombone player.”
