Wandsworth schools have been crowned sporting kings of London after winning the schools finals of the London Youth Games.
Pupils from the borough’s schools accepted the Schools Shield from the Mayor of Wandsworth, and England footballer and former Wandsworth London Youth Games star Siobhan Chamberlain at a special ceremony at Southfields Academy on Monday.
Wandsworth headed the standings with 481 points, ahead of close rivals Richmond on 465, and last year’s winners Hounslow on 452.
Leading the way were Ernest Bevin and Graveny Schools who won male and female volleyball gold.
They were bolstered by Ernest Bevin winning bronze in the year 7 girls’ sportshall athletics finals at Crystal Palace.
England international goalkeeper, and former Wandsworth London Youth Games competitor, Chamberlain said: “To have the opportunity to take part in so many major sports in the London Youth Games is massively important.
Winners: Thirteen-year-olds Sanna Mason and Verity Winter (both from St Cecelias school and competitors in the netball), with England goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain SP75794
“To see what you like and see what you don’t like and to have that competitive edge to it makes it more exciting. I competed for Wandsworth over about five or six years in lots of sports.
"I took part in gymnastics, trampolining , badminton, cross country before we won the girls football in 1998.”
