A man is planning to climb the 40 highest peaks in the Lake District next month to raise money for an Epsom Downs-based charity.

Steve Clark, a creative arts director for a performing arts school, hopes to raise £3,000 by walking 110 miles and climbing over 113,000ft, between May 19 - 25.

he is doing it for The Forces Children’s Trust which helps the children of people who have died or sustained life-threatening injuries while serving in the armed forces. Mr Clark, who is 40 this year, said: "I am particularly moved by the shattering effects losing a parent due to combat can cause to children and their families.

"The work done by The Forces Children's Trust in supporting these families is vital and I want to pledge my support to this cause in every way I can."

He has been doing his training on Box Hill and the Dorking Hills but that nothing will prepare him for the terrain he will be up against next month.

His weekly training schedule includes walking between 80-100 miles, five gym sessions and swimming between two-three miles.

Mr Clark, who has been climbing and trekking for over 10 years, said his ultimate goal is to one day is to stand on the summit of Everest at 29,000ft.

"It will take years of training and support to achieve this goal," he said. "I will never rest until I’ve done it."
