Thieves broke into a popular late night takeaway this morning, stealing cash and £20,000 worth of kitchen equipment.

The burglars forced their way into fried chicken outlet Chic-O-Land in St James Road at 6.30am today, stealing about £2,000 from a safe.

They also took £400 from the tills and two machines used for cooking the poultry, worth an estimated £8,000 to £10,000 each.

Chic-O-Land manager Ziya Gul said he believed the diner - popular with clubbers at The Hippodrome and Oceana - will be closed today and tomorrow.

Mr Gul said: "They forced the door using a metal bar of some sort.

"They came in at about 6.30am - we've caught them on CCTV.

"The earliest we'll be open again should be Wednesday.

"We need to get new machines and clean up - when they took the machines they splashed oil everywhere."
