Epsom MP Chris Grayling paid a surprise visit to the Epsom and Ewell University of the Third Age (U3A) group organisers’ meeting last week.
He joined the meeting to find out more about the organisation which provides for retired or partly retired people a chance to learn new things.
The local group has expanded fast and now has more than 750 members with most participating in one or more of the 80 different groups.
The exciting topics covered at the meetings include current affairs, history, modern foreign languages and croquet.
A spokesman for group said: “The U3A is a unique way of learning with no set texts, no curriculum, no buildings and no exams. They are learning cooperatives run entirely by volunteers. They draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide the interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. The teachers learn and the learners teach.”
