A Cobham activity centre is appealing for £3,000 to refurbish its 1930s washroom facilities, as organisers thank the Surrey community for helping secure the centre’s future.

After the recent completion of the Baden-Powell Centre, which was built in commemoration of Olave, Lady Baden-Powell, The Walton Firs activity centre hopes to improve existing facilities.

The Walton Firs Foundation has raised tens of thousands of pounds to ensure that Lady Baden-Powell’s legacy lives on and that her commitment to the girl guiding and scouting movements can continue through the work of others.

In 2008 the Surrey community backed a campaign to prevent the 28-acre centre from being sold to developers, raising more than £800,000 securing its future use for schools, youth centres, scouts and guides.

The next charity event will be a clay pigeon shoot on April 27, at Ryde Farm in East Clandon, from 10.30am to 1pm.

Deborah Wolford, administrative officer at Walton Firs, adds: “The last five years have been a mixture of hard work and sheer joy. Everything that we’ve achieved would not have been possible without the ongoing support from the Surrey community and we’re grateful for everyone’s help along the way. The charity shoot is a landmark in a very worthwhile journey and we’re proud of everyone who has kindly donated their time and money over the years. We’re delighted to confidently say that the Walton Firs activity centre will now be open for many more years to come.”
