The Olympic torch passing through Sutton cost council taxpayers just £9,000, a Freedom of Information request has revealed.

More than 50,000 people lined the streets of Sutton as the Olympic torch passed through the borough last July.

But the total cost to Sutton Council was only £9,000 which funded stewards, barriers, road closures, road signs, St John Ambulance staff, street cleaning and publicity.

Street dressings, including lamp post banners which still remain, and bunting were paid for with a £50,000 grant from London Mayor Boris Johnson's fund and police and council staff were paid as part of their normal working hours.
