Merton’s top cop has praised his staff and members of the community for helping to make Merton one of the safest borough’s in London.

Crime in the borough is currently at a ten year low with the best burglary detection rates in a decade.

The borough also boasts the best 999 response times anywhere in south London and some of the best reductions in gun crime, knife crime and violence with Merton officers detecting more crime than any other London borough bar one.

In his last message before Christmas Mr Williams, Merton’s borough commander, said: "I am delighted and extremely proud of these achievements but we have not achieved these results alone.

"We have been working closely with the local authority, partners and local residents to make Merton a hard place for criminals to operate.

"We have encouraged the reporting of suspicious activity and asked residents to use the property marking schemes and take extra time to secure their homes."
