You may think David Weir’s gold medals were made of solid gold, but in fact they are gold plated.

Each gold medal contains a minimum six grams of gold and a large piece of silver which would cost about £450.

However, the Paralympic champion’s medals have now become worth their weight in gold.

H&T Pawnbrokers handed over a cash donation of £17,000, matching the weight of all four of his medals, to the charity Get Kids Going which helps get disabled children into sports.

At the weigh-in at the Sutton store this morning the pawnbrokers also handed over an additional £50,000 cheque to the charity of which Weir is a patron.
