A high street retailer has been fined £24,000 after a customer fell through an open floor hatch at its store in Kingston.

Shoe seller Office was found guilty of failing to ensure the health and safety of customers, after a woman tumbled six feet through an open hatch at the company's former Church Street branch in 2010.

The woman injured both knees and suffered trauma and shock.

Judges at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court said Office Holdings did not have a formal approach to health and safety and that training and supervision of staff was insufficient.

The company was fined £12,000, and another £12,000 in costs.

Office in Kingston has since relocated to Clarence Street.
