Scammers are calling people claiming to be their bank and trying to get their card and PIN details, police are warning.

The London-wide scam involves the trickster calling the home of a vulnerable or elderly person and claiming their card is faulty or has been used by a criminal.

They either ask the victim to tell them their PIN or tell them to withdraw all their money then say a courier will be visiting to pick up the money or the card. They then take the money or go and use the card.

Almost 2,000 people have fallen foul of the scam since Christmas and police want people to be on their guard.

A police spokesman said: "Police advice is that if you receive such a call, end it immediately. Then you should report the call to your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team."

If you think you have been called by a scammer you can get in touch with your local team by calling 101.
