A teenager involved in last years Croydon riots has avoided jail.

The 17-year-old who cannot be named, was arrested by police on August 8, exactly a year after the disorder in Croydon.

In interview, the boy admitted to committing two burglaries, one at Argos in Church Street and the other at a Jewellers in Surrey Street.

He also admitted participating in violent disorder in London Road and causing criminal damage at the Iceland store in Surrey Street by kicking and breaking the window.

The teen pleaded guilty to burglary and violent disorder when he appeared at Inner London Crown Court.

He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for 24 months and was ordered to be on an electronic tag and curfew for four months.

He must also carry out 150 hours of unpaid community work and is required to attend probation appointments for 24 months.

Detective Inspector Heather Rook said: "This youth was arrested exactly one year on from the terrible scenes of 2011.

"I think he was surprised police had caught up with him, but we are still determined to identify every person we possibly can that was involved in the events of August 2011 in Croydon.

"We had identified this youth as being involved through CCTV and when my officers interviewed him, he admitted to what he had done almost straight away.

"If you were involved, don’t be fooled into thinking we have forgotten about you - sooner or later you will get a visit from police, so we would urge you to hand yourself in before it gets to that stage."
