A Tooting theatre group has landed a slot at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, writes Jack Mills.

Black Coffee Theatre, three students of the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts, will be performing Let's Have Sex at the famous festival.

In the lead up to that they will combining art, comedy, music, fashion and acting in regular, one night only events at a variety of venues around the capital, including Tooting Tram & Social on Monday.

"We want to showcase new writing, not just in theatres but in spaces that are unusual," explains Maria Crocker, the group's creative director.

"It could be the corner shop, the local pub, someone's kitchen, in a park, or even a train."

Their forthcoming night in Tooting marries installation art, a jumble sale, comedy acts, live music and Let's Have Sex.

"The key aim is to provide a platform for artists to share and collaborate on work," says Crocker.

"Also for people to witness new works expressed in a variety of different ways.

"Tooting is bursting with creative talent, but with nowhere for people to showcase it.

"The events aim to encourage them to share their work and to stimulate the artistic interests of the community.

"The Wandsworth Arts Festival showed us just how much the borough has to offer."

What sets Black Coffee Theatre apart from other south London art collectives like Off Modern, though, is a strong emphasis on theatre and performance.

"We want to create a relaxed atmosphere, in which people can get up and buy a drink or go for a smoke without having to wait for an interval," says Crocker.

"They can browse works of art and listen to the performers on stage, all at once."

Alongside new productions will be re-interpretations of classic performances.

"We take popular texts and strip them down in an attempt to reveal the raw emotions that everyone can identify with.

"Our work isn't just for those who love going to the theatre, but anybody who is willing to listen to a story."

With an engaging line-up including Jack Cooper from the 'So You Think You're Funny' stand-up show and a host of young musicians, the night should be a worthy glimpse of the area's hidden talents.
