The title of the Charles Cryer Theatre's latest show is rather ambiguous - The Visit - and I'm afraid I won't be shedding too much light on it here, because the story is rather a mysterious one, and should stay like that for now.

Acclaimed amdram company Torch Theatre Company are behind the show, in which a woman returns to her unspecified central European hometown, having left years before and become the richest woman in the world in the meantime. During her absence, the town has become destitute.

Torch's June Voller - who plays the lead - takes up the story: "The shops have nothing in them, the factories are closed, everybody is poverty stricken, and of course when she pays a visit they roll out red carpet and make a fuss.

"We then find out the reason why she left, how she acquired all her millions, what has happened to her former lover and the reason for her visit.

"It has on edge of your seat and there is a really tragic climax. Having had a fairly light opening, it gets darker and darker. It's really a love story, actually, involving everybody in the town, but I can't really say any more!"

The Visit was made into a film starring Ingrid Bergmann and and Lauren Bacall played the lead in a Chichester production in 1995. On this occasion, Torch's David Bonner directs, a former professional in the theatre world.
