For two nights only next week, the legendary Sands nightclub will be alive and swinging in the heart of Kingston as one of Frank Sinatra’s most famous live albums is brought to life on the Rose Theatre stage.

Since making the Stars in their Eyes final in 2001, Stephen Triffitt has become one of the best Sinatra tribute acts in the business, starring as Ol’ Blue Eyes for six years in The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas show in the West End and performing in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

He is now staging a solo concert in which he performs songs from the Sinatra at the Sands album in its entirety, backed by a 17-piece big band.

The tour will be calling in at the Rose on June 25 and 26.

Sinatra once said that the run of concerts from which the performances for Sinatra at the Sands was culled was “probably the most exciting engagement I have ever done in my life” and Triffitt says he is relishing the chance to re-create one of the legendary singer’s finest records.

“Frank was in his prime at the time, and the songs such as Don’t Worry About Me and Street of Dreams are fantastic, particularly when they are performed with the live band,” explains Triffitt.

“The show is not just for Sinatra fans though, but for people who want to see a live big band, enjoy the music and see what it might have been like to see Frank perform back then.”

The concert is split into two parts with Triffitt singing songs from the Sinatra at the Sands era that did not appear on the record in the first half, before the full Vegas experience swings into action after an interval.

Triffitt discovered his knack for taking off Sinatra while he was running a friend’s karaoke night at a bar in Tenerife. The former timeshare salesman has since spent plenty of time honing his Frank impression.

“If you are going to emulate Frank Sinatra you have to breathe and phrase like him,” he says.

“Doing the voice is one thing but getting the phrasing and breathing right is another thing altogether, and getting the mannerisms spot on is also very important.

“You can’t just stamp your feet, tilt your head and click your fingers the whole time because then Frank would end up looking like a twittering idiot, but you do have to learn to let yourself go.”
