Normally the words 'I'm too sexy for my cat, poor pussycat' would see you locked up in a mental asylum, but it turned Right Said Fred into a household name.

Back in 1992 their now classic 'I'm Too Sexy' song launched brothers Richard and Fred Fairbrass, complete with vest tops and leather trousers, on to the music scene and changed their lives.

“It was extraordinary,” says Richard ahead of the band's acoustic audience with style show at The Half Moon on Tuesday.

“You do one song that is three minutes long and it changes your entire life.

“I really love that song and I have never once not wanted to sing it.

“I absolutely love it every time and I am so proud of it.

“There aren't many artists who would do a song like that.”

After all that sexiness the boys went Deeply Dippy but have had little success in this country since then.

In Germany, however, they've pretty much been releasing music non-stop.

“German radio was very ready to accept us in the early 2000s and we had a label who understood us,” says 56-year-old Richard.

“They knew how to market us and the kind of records we needed to make and that's why we had so much success over there.

“In the UK we committed the cardinal sin of making a poor second album and we have never been forgiven.

“Britain might think that it likes quirky out of the box pop music but it doesn't.

“You only have to look at the British music scene to want to slit your throat.

“Instead of becoming more imaginative the labels have become more nervous, frightened and predictable.

“You won't get anything original and I haven't heard a new track that made me think wow for about 10 years.”

The current mini tour of just four dates sees Richard and co performing their hits acoustically for the first time as well as hosting a question and answer session.

“The CD market has collapsed so you have to come up with a different way of making a living,” he says.

“When we do large shows in Europe the set up alone costs £10,000 so we decided to do this on the road instead with just the four of us on stage.

“We were getting a bit a bored with ourselves as well.

“We wanted to make a shift to two things, more live work and more acoustic touring in the UK.”
