After living his whole life in Croydon and even working at the iconic Cartoon, Dave Eve tried to escape last year by getting married and moving to America.

No such luck though as he returns on Friday for the second time in three months with his Nirvana tribute band, Nervana, playing at the Scream Lounge.

"Sometimes I miss Croydon, it's a very different place," he says.

"Croydon is Croydon and always will be.

"It's not a bad place and the music scene has always been pretty good there.

"I was doing sound at the Cartoon and there were a lot of bands that got their start in the music scene there.

"Then I ran a recording studio at Scream for about seven years so I know the people there and it is like the next Cartoon, with all the young bands that play there.

"We played there three months ago and had a really good time so it will be good to see some familiar faces."

Nervana has been going for five years now and features Eve on bass, American Steve Kilroy on drums and Irishman Jonny O'Connor, who looks scarily like Kurt Cobain.

Eve and Kilroy were both in Australian Nirvana before regrouping as Nervana and Eve admits he did not know too much about Cobain and the songs of Nirvana before he started on the tribute circuit.

"I think when I was listening to that kind of music Nevermind had just come out," he says.

"I never got to see them live though and it was only when I joined the band that I got to know the songs.

"Australian Nirvana was my first tribute band as I had always been in original bands before then.

"When you are in an original band there is a lot of stigma attached to tribute bands but the gigs are really incredible."

Nervana supported by The Hangovers, Scream Lounge, South End, May 28, 8pm, £5. Call 020 8667 0155 or visit myspace.com/screamstudios.
