Twickenham’s Anonymous Tip have been making a racket on the underground punk scene with their politically conscious music since 2002 and their latest single, The Weirder Brave, follows in a similar vein.

Like most Anonymous Tip tunes, The Weirder Brave, released on Monday, is fast paced and furious, with a fair amount of screaming chucked into the mix, with lyrics inspired by lead singer Sanj Surati’s memories of his youth.

“I grew up in the 90s in Feltham and there was quite a big BNP presence,” explains the 31-year-old.

"There used to be rude slogans on the wall and one of my best friends, who was white, got a lot of abuse because he was friends with a brown kid.

“I was only 12 and it was upsetting for me - I didn't really have a voice or any power to do anything about it. When I left schooI I said if it ever happened that the BNP were making a comeback I would do what I could do to try and stop them getting any power. So I'm using this platform I have in a band to make it clear to people that voting for them is not a good thing for the future of the country."

Anonymous Tip (comprising Taran Spear, Adrian Paton and Chris Brazier alongside Surati) have been surviving over the last eight years on their own terms and have built a loyal following in the process.

Although it is often said young people aren’t interested in politics, Surati believes that the reaction of Anonymous Tip fans to the band’s polemical punk, proves that that assertion is not neccesarily a realistic one.

"We've always been a political band," he says. “Our fans who have stuck with us since the beginning have always been interested in what we have to say and the fact that we use our band to express ourselves politically has reaffirmed our presence on the scene.”

The lads recently ended a UK tour with a show at Kingston’s Fighting Cocks and they play Finnegan’s Wake, in Ealing, on May 8 - Surati says he and his bandmates love playing gigs on their home turf.

He adds: “This is where we started but it is only in the last year that we come back to playing Kingston, Richmond and the rest of the area a lot. It’s strange and it feels like we have been away on holiday”

With the release of The Weirder Brave, the holiday is most definitely over and with their next album already in the pipeline, the next vacation could be a long time coming.
