With Haiti still reeling after January’s devastating earthquake, people around the globe have been doing their bit to raise funds to aid the rebuilding of the Carribean island and the lives of its inhabitants.

From pop singles, featuring Rod Stewart, Robbie Williams and Leona Lewis, to poetry readings, led by poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, there have been plenty of headline-grabbing events as well as smaller, but no less worthy, efforts to bring in cash for the earthquake victims, in the shape of individual donations and community events.

Kingston’s popular music venue, the Grey Horse, is now throwing its hat into the ring by staging a benefit gig that will bring a number of musicians, well-known on the Royal Borough’s live circuit, together for one night only.

Many of the musicians on the bill, including the Robin Bibi Band, Duncan Eagles and Liam Grundy, play regularly at the Grey Horse and the adjoining Ram Jam Club. Other acts set to appear are Bad Influence, Papa George and Alan Glen.

One of the rising stars of the Kingston scene, singer Rachel Rabin, who has recently returned from Los Angeles, where she performed at the legendary Viper Room, will be bringing her blues-inspired touch to proceedings, and she is delighted to be taking part.

“I’m good friends with the landlord of the Grey Horse, Richard Fletcher, and, as soon as he phoned me up and asked me if I wanted to do the charity gig, I said, ‘of course,’” she explains.

“It is all the musicians from the area – I think there are going to be about 25 on the bill. I haven’t organised anything and I won’t be bringing my own band as I’ll probably only be doing about two songs.

“Everyone knows what I like to do so I’m sure someone will play with me, or I’ll just nick a guitar and play a couple of songs on my own. It’s going to be a lot of fun – you can’t ever take yourself too seriously in music and these kinds of gigs are great to do.”

Tickets cost £10, or you are more than welcome to donate more.
