For more than 125 years the Treorchy Male Voice Choir has established itself as one of the greatest choral ensembles of all time.

Having spent the latter part of last year touring Australia and New Zealand, they are back in England next Saturday to play a benefit gig at Fairfield Halls with all proceeds going to Wooden Spoon, a rugby based charity raising funds for mentally and physically handicapped children in Surrey.

Rugby commentator John Inverdale will introduce the evening, while Sian Reeves, who plays Sally Spode in Emmerdale, will also be lending her support by meeting and greeting people and signing autographs.

The choir will then be in the Arnhem Gallery after the concert giving an informal sing-along with anyone that wants to join.

First formed with inauspicious beginnings in a Rhondda Valley pub in 1883, the choir developed into a national eisteddfod winner, culminating in a Royal Command Performance for Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle.

In 1946, John Hayden Davies reformed them, turning raw musical recruits into an international institution, gaining a record eight National Eisteddfod wins.

They've made two feature films and became the first male choir to venture into the uncharted territory of popular music with almost 60 commercial recordings.

Among their many achievements they count making a ground-breaking album of music by Freddie Mercury, becoming the first British choir to perform Sibelius’ Kullervo Symphony in Finnish and sharing the stage with renowned entertainers like Sir Tom Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Bassey, Michael Ball, Katherine Jenkins, Bryn Terfel, Ozzie Osbourne, Jon Bon Jovi, Cliff Richard, Andrea Bocelli and Russell Watson.

They have performed to 6000 people in Strasbourg Cathedral, visited the White House and were the first Welsh choir to appear at Sydney Opera House in 1986.

The choir is a registered charity and donates thousands of pounds to worthwhile causes every year, with the latest album, The Liberation Hymn, raising money for the Help for Heroes Campaign.
