The creative force behind cult band Wishbone Ash makes an appearance in Sutton this week, when founder member Martin Turner brings his offshoot brigade to the Boom Boom Club.

Devon’s Turner was both the bass guitarist and lead vocalist for the quirky four-piece who were famed for their twin lead guitars, melodic songwriting and complex instrumental style.

Founded in 1969, Wishbone Ash caught a lucky break when they were asked to support Deep Purple, and followed that with the release of their debut self-titled album.

Further records followed, including the classic Argus (1972), voted album of the year by both Melody Maker and Sound magazine.

Despite continued success, both on record and global tours, eventually the company bigwigs demanded a more commercial style, leading to Turner’s departure.

Turner went on to produce some solo material, before rejoining the band in 1987, helping to put together three albums before leaving once again in 1991.

For the next decade the Torquay star continued to appear on and off at live shows, along with helping to produce and remaster rereleases of Ash’s extensive back catalogue.

But in 2005 Turner decided to take the plunge and elected to form Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash, along with guitarists Keith Buck and Ray Hatfield and drummer Rob Hewins.

Touring extensively, the group perform material from the original bands heritage years, along with lesser-known tracks from Ash’s early catalogue.

This then led to Turner’s pack releasing their own live albums, and being joined by original member Ted Turner for a handful of live dates.

Since then the line-up has changed once again, with Buck and Hewins replaced by Danny Willson and Dave Wagstaffe.

But things continue to motor along nicely, with Turner even recently announcing that the group will release their own original material in 2010.

So pop along to the Boom Boom and pay homage to one of the nation’s true musical visionaries.
