Croydon's Celtic music duo Band of Two will be celebrating 20 years on the road together at Croydon Folksong Club this Monday.

Since meeting at the Hastings Beer Festival in 1989, folk musicians Pete Fyfe and Garry Blakeley have gone on to perform for Dawn French and Lenny Henry and played to more than 300,000 at the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Before their chance meeting two decades ago, Pete was working as a British Telecom operator and Garry as a carpet fitter.

They had both enjoyed some success on the British folk circuit in bands such as Eavesdropper, Collaboration, Brian Boru and Better Days but it wasn't until they teamed up together that they really began to get noticed.

They began at a local level, performing at The Blarney Stone pub in Croydon where the publican had booked them simply on the strength of their demo tape.

Things went well though and within three months the diary was full and they even had a gig in Germany.

They released their first CD, What You See..., in 1996 featuring their most requested live songs and a year later they supported former Neighbours actor Craig McLachlan on his tour, while they have also worked with Chris Shields, John Townsend, Les Elvin and Shep Woolley.
