Stepping out from behind the shadow of an illustrious and successful father can be a difficult thing but Pete Brown is adamant he is his own man.

Having spent much of his music career as a producer behind the scenes or touring with his rock and roll father Joe and successful sister Sam, Pete is embarking on his first solo outing after popular demand resulted in debut album Not Before Time.

"It just kind of evolved," he said.

"I started touring with my dad and have been doing his show for four years and people kept asking me if I had a record.

"I decided to make one on the cheap to sell at my dad's gigs and it did really well so I thought I better make a bit more effort with it.

"It's quite relaxed and all the tracks are more artistic than commercial and I think that is in its favour, it's a grower and you can listen to it a lot.

"With the tour I am very excited if a bit nervous.

"I don't know why I should be, I have gigging for years."

With a father still touring and making music after five decades, it couldn't have been easy for Pete to escape his shadow but he was keen to play down the influence his dad had on him.

"He has been a big influence on me as have lots of people," he said.

"I worked in the studio for eight years working on lots of records with lots of different people so I am quite my own man.

"I started when I was 16 and the first record I worked on was Dear Prudence by Siouxsie & the Banshees in 1983.

"I say worked on, I just made the tea but it was good to see how the process worked."

Sister Sam, whose worldwide hit Stop was produced by Pete, has returned the favour on this album.

"We went through a lot of my songs we would like to do and there are five covers versions too, including a complete reworking of The White Stripes' Doorbell" said Pete.

"It's very diverse, there are a couple of tracks that sound like Jeff Buckley, there's one that's a bit Red Hot Chilli Peppers then there's blues and rock as well."
