Valhalla, Silversky and Junk Time Party sound like things from a strange out of space Viking fairytale.

In reality, they are just some of the bands at Scream Studios first music festival.

More than 20 acts will descend on the Brief, from metal and rock to hip hop, jazz, soul and acoustic, as a number of Croydon and south London bands, including hightly-rated Mordecai and Earodynamics, take to the two stages.

Although this is the first time the two-day festival has taken place, Scream hope to make it a regular fixture in the town’s music scene.

“We have done couple of one off Scream gigs at music venues around other towns but this will definitely become an annual fixture,” said organiser Dave Sears who will be also be performing with his band The 23 Enigma and as a solo artist.

“We may even do a small Christmas festival and see how we do, then next year do it with more bands and bigger headliners.”

The aim behind the festival is to make people aware of Scream’s 18-room facility in South Croydon that is in the process a major refurbishment, including thousands of pounds worth of new equipment.

“It’s not just a refurbishment,” said Sears.

“We’ve spent a lot this year on new equipment and a PA system. The festival is a way to show off that equipment.

“There will be two stages, a main stage and an acoustic stage and the equipment will all be there. It’s no trouble for the bands, they just turn up and use the equipment we provide.”

Scream is now in its fifteenth year and its studios include two recording and several rehearsal rooms, which are also popular with dance groups.

There’s a Sex Pistols room, a Nirvana Room, an Egyptian themed room and chillout areas as well as two Pink Floyd inspired doorways.

It has also expanded to set up its own website where Croydon bands can make their songs available for download.

“Bands sign themselves up to us and we can put their music up there, said Sears.

“They get 80 per cent of the downloading costs and we put a top ten chart on our website.”
