Green-fingered volunteers are overhauling a corner of a park in an effort to make it almost completely edible.

Community groups are developing the plot of land in Westow Park, Crystal Palace, to create a garden growing organic fruit and vegetables.

In a weeding session last weekend, members of Crystal Palace Transition Town and the Friends of Westow Park began clearing ivy and nettles to prepare the soil for planting. Organisers hope the garden will become a hub for swapping gardening tips as well as community events.

Local food writer Rachel de Thample, who is leading the project, said: “There are lots of mouth-watering things planned like elderflower cordial and jam-making events, summer herbal tea parties and more.”

The groups plan to hold similar sessions every Saturday from 10am and are looking for residents to join the project.
