The elegant Atithi Restaurant in Twickenham offers discerning diners a unique taste of India from a Michelin BIB Gourmand-winning chef.

Krishnapal Negi has created a menu of delicious dishes for the new restaurant in York Street that successfully mixes original and traditional cuisine. He’s combined fresh flavours with traditional favourites, and taking a leaf from his BIB Gourmand credentials, the menu provides really good food at a moderate price.

We were guided through the selection by our knowledgeable waiter, Swapneel, who enthusiastically described the dishes. He was equally helpful with the wine menu, which offers a good selection of fairly priced wines from the old and new worlds. We opted for a reasonably priced bottle of Italian Via Nova Pinot Grigio, which worked well with the food.

On Swapneel’s advice, we tried Aloo Tikki Chaat (£5.50) and Prawn Naryali (£8.95) to start. Both were elegantly presented - the Aloo Tikki Chaat, a spectacular spiced potato cake served on a bed of tangy chickpeas with sweet yoghurt and tamarind chutney could have graced any fine dining establishment. But it was the fantastical Prawn Naryali that had us sending compliments to the kitchen.

For the main course I chose Masala Liptey Murgh (£8.50) and for my vegetarian friend, the Bhutta Methi Palak (£6.95). The Masala Liptey Murgh consists of succulent pieces of tandoori grilled chicken cooked with onion, bell peppers and tomatoes in a mild thick sauce. The chicken was melt in the mouth tender and the flavours and sauce a delight on the palate.

The Bhutta Methi Palak is baby corn stir fried with sun dried fenugreek, fresh spinach and cumin, garnished with toasted sesame seeds. It looked and tasted fantastic. To accompany the dishes we ordered Pulao rice and perfect and truly inspiring Peshawari Naan bread, stuffed with shredded coconut and almond that perfectly complemented the main dishes.

The atmosphere in the restaurant is relaxed and refined, with modern pale maple panelled walls and subtle lighting that allows you to appreciate the food without feeling you are in a spotlight.

We finished with a light and delicious Indian Pistachio Ice Cream – a perfect way to finish the meal.

All in all, a lovely evening... great food, excellent service and a welcoming ambience.
