‘Immortals’ is probably what I would call a guilty pleasure. As a sword and sandals epic it more or less does what it says on the tin. The film is from the producers of ‘300’ which was also a 15 certificate but I must warn you that the violence in ‘Immortals’ is very graphic and ‘Clash of the Titans’ it is not.

Synopsis: The brutal King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his murderous army are rampaging across Greece. Hyperion’s goal is to unleash the power of the sleeping Titans to vanquish both the Gods of Olympus and all of humankind. The Gods however remain powerless to stop Hyperion until a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) comes forth as their only hope.

Henry Cavill (soon to be Superman) does an ok job as Theseus and makes the most of the dialogue he has been given and Mickey Rouke, who seems to have had a re-birth of his career really excels at playing nasty. There is however a slightly strange tone to this movie which is along the lines of “If you want to join King Hyperion’s gang you’ll have to wear this gimp mask and leather posing pouch”...really?

The film gets its credibility tick from using the ever reliable John Hurt as one of the main characters, unlike Stephen Dorff’s thief Stavros who appears to have wandered into the wrong film with his wise cracking American accent.

‘Immortals’ is in cinemas now. I watched it in 3D and must admit I was entertained.
