Have you ever thought what you could do with that rusting bucket in the garden? Or those empty can's of fizzy pop? Well, the possibilities are endless, as the latest exhibition at the Museum of Croydon shows.

Treasures From Trash, in partnership with Know Trash, is an interactive exhibition for all the family that examines the creative possibilities with our rubbish and aim to educate people about what they can do with things they would usually just throw away.

"After travelling around Asia and Africa with my wife Ruth, we discovered how precious, what we commonly call rubbish, actually is," says co-founder Neil Thomson.

"We saw people were combing the resource of waste as a way of putting money into the family, as a means of surviving.

"The people were more visually literate than verbally, so could create useful, decorative objects with their bare hands."

All the objects have been created by people from around the globe, including such countries as Cuba, South Africa, India and Mexico.

A suitcase made from bottle caps and an unusual crouched monster made from scrap bike parts are just some of the objects on display.

Thomson was keen to hold the exhibition in Croydon following a recommendation on how wonderfully diverse the community is.

"We are delighted to be in Croydon and wanted to celebrate with them the various communities across the globe," he says.

"We were keen to work alongside the people so we got to work with Croydon Waste Management & Streetscene.

"They got their creative juices flowing and their work will be displayed in the second gallery.

"It gives people a good idea of what they could do, the whole family can get involved and bridge the gap."

The exhibition will also be holding workshops that include games, fun challenges and creative sessions where participants can make their own handbag, construct a robot from scrap materials or even take a lesson in sewing techniques.

"This is the first time we are holding an exhibition of this kind," added Thomson.

"And we really hope we can inspire Croydon to start getting creative with their rubbish."
