The Daleks, those fearsome mutants from the planet Skaro, will continue their bid for world domination by stopping off at, of all places, the Charles Cryer Theatre this week.

Well, actually they won’t - but two actors playing Daleks will.

In a Breakfast Cat Comedy double bill, Vision Impaired, a 1963 two-hander by Richard James, details the groan, gurns and gains of two actors stuffed inside Dalek costumes on a television set.

The creations will be played by Roberto Prestoni and Tony Bannister, and Prestoni reveals the reasoning behind taking the project on board.

He explains: “I think it has only actually been performed three times.

“I was looking for a two-hander on the internet and stumbled across the script purely by chance.

“I am a big Dr Who fan, and Tony is as well, so it seemed a pretty obvious choice for us.

”In a way the actors playing the villains were very much the unsung heroes of the programme.

“Trapped inside their casings, forgotten and cramped while other scenes were recorded with the ‘stars’, this will be our tribute to them.”

The actors have widely differing characters - Bannister’s happy to sit in silence while Prestoni’s is a fidgeting bundle of energy.

And Prestoni is more than happy to take the gamble of just having the two of them on stage.

He adds: “Neither of us have done anything like this before so there is a bit of nerves involved.

“But we are both pretty fearless types and we are both used to the stage so we have nothing really to lose.”

And what about the choice of project?

One could argue the Daleks are just as popular, if not more so, than when the piece was originally written - what does the actor put that down to.

Prestoni suggests: “I think it is the mystery element that there is something inside there.

“There is an element of comedy to them with the voice and everything and that really contrasts with their complete evil.

“At the end of the day they are very iconic creations - you may not have watched a single episode of Dr Who but you will still know what a Dalek looks like and sounds like.”

Prestoni also directs the second short of the night, Ladies, This is War!, a light-hearted romp set in the luxurious surroundings of a health spa.
