Transport yourself back in time for a jousting tournament at Hampton Court Palace.

Each day over the August bank holiday weekend King Henry VIII and his party will be welcomed to his favourite palace from 11am.

Visitors can join the king’s celebrations over the birth of the Princess Elizabeth - though everyone knows he would have preferred a little Prince.

Queen Anne Boleyn is optimistic for the princess’s future and the king puts a brave face on it to host a jousting tournament in her honour.

The action will kick off at noon and 3pm on the east front gardens with equestrian hunting games and spectators can cheer on jousting matches.

Throughout the day visitors can meet his majesty’s prized hawks and hounds, which will be on display in the palace courtyards and gardens.

The celebrations will come to a close when the king and queen bid their subjects farewell at 4pm.

Tudor Joust at Hampton Court Palace. Saturday, August 24, to Monday, August 26; 11am to 4pm. Tickets £8.80 for children £17.60 for adults. Call 0844 4827777 or visit hrp.org.uk/HamptonCourtPalace.
