Letter to the Editor: We must reinstate freedom pass for mentally ill
6:40am Wednesday 4th July 2012 in Merton
By Councillor Suzanne Evans, Merton Council shadow health spokeswoman (Conservative, Hillside ward)
Merton Council's director for Environment and Regeneration says he would prefer income from parking fines to be zero, but comforts himself in the knowledge that money raised goes to help fund the Freedom Pass.
As your article revealed, fines have generated at least £700,000 more than expected so far this year.
So perhaps he would ask Labour to use £330,000 of this unexpected bonus to give the Freedom Pass back to the mentally ill people they withdrew it from in 2011 and reverse further cuts Labour plans to make to the Freedom Pass budget over the next three years?
This would still leave Labour with a whopping £370,000 to add to the £15million cash hoard they are refusing to spend on key frontline services.
