Tribute to Merton Councillor Peter Walker's schools legacy

By Abigail Jones; Wimbledon Labour party chairman

May I pay tribute to the commitment that Councillor Peter Walker showed in providing Wimbledon children with an excellent education at local schools while serving as a cabinet member for education on Merton Council.

When talking to residents in Wimbledon, we are regularly told by parents with young children they are extremely concerned about the lack of school places and want their children to receive an excellent education within their community.

The Labour Party believes it is right that this council has honoured its obligation to provide all children in the borough with an education and have prioritised expanding outstanding primary schools.

Therefore I, for one, am grateful for this programme of expansions that Coun Walker oversaw when he was cabinet member and wish to honour the work he did to ensure that children have a place at their local school.

He should be proud of this legacy and the manner in which he stood up to those on the Save Dundonald Rec campaign who are denying children the opportunity to receive a good, local education.

The show of support for Cllr Walker from Ms Jones is surely welcome to that gentleman, if somewhat overdue. For the record, the people working to save Dundonald Rec don't have an issue with expanding schools, they just want to preserve open spaces - surely a resident of Merton Park can understand that?
